What is Sum Function?
Sum Function is not a sports story. It’s not a war story. It’s a raw, unflinching look at survival, connection, and the fight for access in a world that isn’t built for people with disabilities.
At its core, the film follows the Oscar Mike Militia — the nation’s only all-veteran wheelchair rugby team — as they collide on and off the court. Each player lives with a body that no longer works as it once did, thanks to illness, war, or tragedy, but the real story runs deeper than the game. Through loss, resilience, and an often-painful search for identity, these teammates discover that strength is not found in surviving alone but in choosing to fight together; that the whole is always greater than the sum of its parts.
Over several years of filming, we captured victories and defeats, both individual and collective. What begins as battle for wins on the scoreboard unravels into a much larger truth: the fight doesn’t end when war is over — it begins again at home.
Now submitting to the 2026 festival circuit, Sum Function is a story told from inside the community it represents, directed by Marine Corps veteran and quadriplegic Noah Currier, alongside filmmaker Nick Cavalier. It is a story of defiance, humanity, and the refusal to be defined by loss.
