Sum Function Returns to Rockford for One-Night-Only Hometown Premiere at Hard Rock Casino
On Saturday, May 30, Sum Function will come home to Rockford, Illinois.
After earning national recognition on the film festival circuit, the award-winning documentary will screen at Hard Rock Casino Rockford. The one-night-only hometown premiere event will feature a red carpet experience, full film screening, and a live “Behind the Scenes” Q&A with the filmmakers and members of the Oscar Mike Militia.
For director Noah Currier, the night represents a full-circle moment.
Currier, a Marine Corps veteran and Rockford-area native who grew up in nearby Poplar Grove, was paralyzed in a car accident near Camp Pendleton just days after returning from combat – he was only 21. Unwilling to accept a life on the sidelines, he went on to found the Oscar Mike Foundation—right in Rockford’s backyard—building what has become a national movement dedicated to keeping injured veterans On-the-Move through adaptive sports and community.
Now, the story that started here is coming home.
Premiering earlier this year at the Annapolis Film Festival, Sum Function earned Audience Choice Best Feature Documentary before continuing its momentum with additional honors at the Beverly Hills Film Festival and WorldFest-Houston International Film Festival.
More than a sports documentary, Sum Function follows members of the Oscar Mike Militia—America’s only all-veteran wheelchair rugby team—as they rebuild their lives after life-altering injury or illness. Every athlete featured in the film lives with impairment in all four limbs, yet continues to compete at an elite level in adaptive sport.
The result is a raw, emotional, and deeply human look at identity, resilience, purpose, and what it takes to move forward when everything falls apart.
“This is more than just a screening for us,” said Currier. “It’s a chance to bring this story back to the people and community who were part of it from the very beginning.”
The hometown premiere is expected to draw one of the largest local film audiences of the year, with seating for up to 1,800 attendees inside Hard Rock Casino’s live event venue.
Following the screening, attendees will have the opportunity to hear directly from the filmmakers and veterans featured in the documentary during a live 30-minute Q&A discussion.
Be there when Sum Function comes home.
